WELCOME BACK – New & Returning Members!

First of all, the Grassy Hill Men’s Association would like to welcome back all the returning members and all new members for the official open of the 2010 season. We have had an excellent membership drive but do still have a limited number of openings.  If you know of someone who would like to join download an application from the website, see one of the board members or sign up at the pro shop.

There are many exciting changes both within the association and at the course.  As many of you know, Chris Kipp, the club superintendent, has been making many changes on the course including new tee boxes and clearing of dead trees.

The association is again helping the “First Tee” Association in the State of Connecticut.  First Tee is dedicated to providing young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life enhancing values such as honest, integrity, and sportsmanship. Thanks to the members who generously contributed, as a club we raised over $350.

Glenn's Corner -

The newly appointed PGA Professional Glenn Dobieski would like to welcome everyone to Grassy Hill Country Club!  A little bit of background about Glenn, he has held many positions and worked for over 20 years as a golf professional.  Glenn is looking forward to another exciting Men’s Association Golf season. Beyond our weekend events Glenn will be sponsoring a Thursday afternoon Match Play League and President’s Cup Competition  signup sheets are in the Pro Shop. The Pro Shop will continue to stock a wide array of merchandise including a fine variety of clubs, shoes, etc., for all of you looking to upgrade your game. The Pro Shop also offers the ability to special order any golf item you may need. Great sales will be posted during the year. Again, Glenn welcomes The GHMA members to a new golf season at Grassy Hill, and promises to make your each and every golfing experience a pleasurable one.

Sunday Limitations - Tee Times

Glenn will continue to limit Sunday morning tee times to 34 groups. Every attempt will be made not to move groups to 11:30 am.  If this is necessary, every attempt will be made not to move the same groups but if increased play on Sunday continues groups should plan on 1 or 2 late morning tee times. A big help would be to use Saturday times as much as possible and understand when your group is scheduled for a later morning starting time.

SLOW PLAY and Pace of Play!

Every year we receive many suggestions on how to speed up play at Grassy Hill on the weekends.

Here are some ideas to increase pace:

  • When riding in a cart, drive the cart to the first ball and drop off the first player with his choice of clubs. The second player should proceed in the cart to his ball. After the first player hits his stroke, he should begin walking toward the cart as the second golfer is playing.
  • Use the time you spend getting to your ball to think about the next shot - the yardage, the club selection. When you reach your ball you'll need less time to figure out the shot.
  • If you are unsure whether your ball has come to rest out of bounds, or may be lost, immediately hit a provisional ball so that you won't have to return to the spot to replay the shot. If you are playing a recreational match with, shall we say, a "loose interpretation" of the rules, then simply drop a new ball somewhere around the area where your ball was lost and keep playing.
  • Begin reading the green and lining up putts as soon as you reach the green. Don't wait until it's your turn to putt to start the process of reading the green. Do it as soon as you reach the green so that when it's your turn you can step right up and putt.
  • Never delay making a stroke because you're having a conversation with a playing partner. Put the conversation on hold, make your stroke, then pick up the conversation again.

·         On Par 3 holes – and the group is ready on the tee, call “the group up” to the green prior to putting out.  This simple act will keep groups moving throughout the course.

Tips for Completing Your Weekly Tournament Scorecard from The Tournament Committee

Avoid having a good round get disqualified as a result of poor scorecard management.  Follow the simple rules and compete in each week’s tournament!

1.  Make sure the first name and last names, ghin numbers and handicaps are on the scorecard.
2.  Date of play, scorer's signature and attested signature must be filled out.
3.  Please check the latest handicap before each tournament. The most recent handicaps are either posted in the pro shop, on the membership board outside the pro shop or downstairs on the board just before entering the locker room.
4.  In gross and net tournaments, there are occasions when teams and/or individuals do not want to participate in one of the categories.(gross or net) If this is the case, please make a proper notification on the scorecard showing the category that you/team wants to participate in.
5.  There have been a number of instances where scorecards are not submitted. If for some reason you decide that after signing up and playing that you do not want to be considered a participant in the tournament scoring, then just put WD(withdrew) next to your name and/or team, post your score and drop it in the scorecard box. This will save a lot of time for the committee when they are reviewing scorecards for tournament winners.
6.  Please review the SAMPLE SCORECARDS near the sign-up sheets that are posted for each tournament. These scorecards will give you all the info you need in preparing an acceptable card.
7.  Make sure all scores are posted into the computer.
